EA Announces Madden NFL 09 and NCAA Football 09 Cover Athletes
June 22, 2008
Every year when the EA Sports announces the cover athletes for their acclaimed Madden Football and NCAA Football franchises, it’s kind of a big deal. This year is no different, but there’s a twist. Generally, the cover athlete has been an active player that was named the NFL MVP or won the Heisman Trophy the year before. There have been very few exceptions. This year is an exception. Notice that I mentioned the player being “active?”

This is slightly older news, but Brett Favre was announced the cover athlete for Madden 09 cover athlete in late April. Packers fans rejoice. The majority of football fans feel that it was a fitting tribute to a great player that retired. Yes, Favre retired last year after 16th season in the league. But, still there are those that feel he shouldn’t be on the cover of Madden 09. Was putting Favre on the cover a tribute to a great player? Or was it a way to guarantee that the “Madden Curse” will be broken? Madden 09 hits stores on August 12th.
In related news, the cover athlete(s) of the NCAA Football 09 game have been announced as well. This year developers decided to take a different route with this series as well. For the first time, there will be multiple players (and a mascot) on the cover of NCAA Football 09. Like Madden, NCAA Football has normally had the Heisman trophy winner from the year before on its cover with last year being an exception. This year’s cover athletes are as follows. Arkansas Running Back Darren McFadden (360), Boston College Quarterback Matt Ryan (PS3) and Sparty the Michigan State mascot will grace the cover of the Wii version of NCAA Football 2009. The PS2 and PSP versions will have their cover athletes announced at a later date. NCAA Football 2009 will be at your local retailer on July 15th.
