Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
June 23, 2008
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is the newest game from Activision and Neversoft in the Guitar Hero series to be released for the Xbox360, PlayStation2, PlayStation3, and Wii. A spin-off from the regular series, this game will be heavily based on music from the 70s rock band, Aerosmith, while also including songs from other bands similar to Aerosmith. The game, set to be released on June 27, 2008 in Europe and June 29, 2008 in North America, will follow the band from the start of their career dating back to 1970 and going all the way up to the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll hall of fame in 2001.
Starting the game, the player will be able to play as Aerosmith lead guitarist and song writer Joe Perry. Once the player has passed certain points, they will be able to unlock other members of the band, including Tom Hamilton and Brad Whitford. The game will focus on the good times the band had, rather than the trials and tribulations that set the band back.
The gameplay of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will be based on the same gameplay of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. The player must hit notes as they correspond on the screen while also strumming the strum bar in order to stay in the game and increase their score. If the player misses too many notes, they will fail the stage, in a fashion that many rock fans know: getting booed off the stage. Hitting a string of ten notes correctly will earn a player a bonus multiplier. There are also special star notes, that when enough are correctly hit can utilize “Star Power”, in which the player will earn an even greater number of points, while also lowering the speed at which the “Rock” meter decreases.
The developers of the game also sought to give an accurate feel of where the band has played. Many historical venues will become playable in the game, such as Max’s Kansas City in New York. Other venues are inspired by some of the bands album covers, such as Toys in the Attic and Nine Lives.
The game also features a large list of master tracks from the band, such as “Dream On” and “Sweet Emotion” There is a total of fourty-one songs, twenty-five by Aerosmith, four by Joe Perry, and twelve by other opening bands.
On a less positive note, some fans may be dissapointed to find out that some of the elements present in previous games are no longer present in this installment. Most notably, the option to play a co-op career mode has been omitted, meaning you will have to pull off the career mode solo.
In order to promote the game, Activision has released “Dream On” to the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store as a free download from February 16-18, 2008, upon which it was removed pending the release of the game. NASCAR fans will also see a special advertisment for the game as #40 Chip Ganassi will be racing in a special Guitar Hero: Aerosmith themed car courtesy of Target, the main sponsor of Ganassi on June 29, 2008 at New Hampshire Speedway. Long time fans of the Guitar Hero series will also see some treats with the bundle pack of this game: a special faceplate that will be available for all versions except the Playstation2 edition, which will feature a regular Kramer wireless guitar. Also available with the bundle pack is an Aerosmith tour book.
The game looks like it will be a welcome addition to any Guitar Hero or Aerosmith fan alike. Many fans of the game will also notice that the game feels cleaner, as hammer-ons and pull-offs flow better. While it may seem as a subtle tweak to Guitar Hero III, the game is certainly going to get some attention, both from previous players, and even newer yet-to-be fans.
