Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo’s Dungeon
July 1, 2008
If you have ever played one of the later Final Fantasy games, you probably have noticed that somewhere, there is a yellow bird wandering around a field. These birds, Chocobos, have attracted a large fan base for being cute, and because they serve as an ally in most games. They are generally flightless, but some of them posses extra powers, such as the ability to fly, among other things. Well, there is yet another addition to the Final Fantasy series, this time, it revolves around the Chocobo and a Cid character. It is the sequel to the Nintendo DS game, Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales, developed by none other than Square-Enix.
The game is set to be released on July 8, 2008 in North America and has already been released in Japan, and there here is no word on a European release at the moment. The game will only be available on the Wii.
The game will be set in the fictional city of Lostime, where Chocobo and Cid meet a young boy named Raffaello, who helps them in restoring the lost memories of the town, hence the name. In the center of the town, a clock causes the townspeople to lost their memories when it rings. Chocobo and Cid then have to enter the memories of Lostime that were created by Raffaello in order to save the memories of the people.
The game play will focus on the Chocobo as it enters randomly generated dungeons and the battle will stay turn-based as most other Final Fantasy games have been. Unlike past games in the Chocobo series, this new instalment will feature a job system, which will ultimately shape which dungeons the Chocobo will enter. Another addition will be “pop-up duels”, which have been present in previous Chocobo titles. The player can acquire “enemy cards”, which can be used to play various mini-games.
Development of the game began in November of 2006 once new people were added to the development team. The series has tried to appeal more to children and females, which is a turn from most Final Fantasy games. The music is pretty much remixed versions of earlier Final Fantasy themes, just with a feel to suit the game, and some songs play backwards, which is supposed to imply the restoration of memory.
