In-Game XMB: Sonys Answer to Achievements

July 15, 2008

A new upcoming firmware update for the PS3 will have Sony competing head-to-head with the XBox 360’s Achievements system.  Also included in the update is an ability to open the system menu while playing games and  custom soundtracks.  The new firmware is version 2.4 and is due for release this summer, the ability to access some system functions while accessing the XMB in game menu during a game is a major addition, another feature of the XMB is being able to send messages to your friends without leaving the game you are playing.

You will also be able to browse through your media on your PS3, but you won’t be able to view them, future games will allow for custom soundtracks giving the player the ability to use the XMB menu to turn down the soundtrack of the currently played game, and choose his own playlist from the music stored on the PS3.

The most anticipated feature of the XMB is the Trophies system, designed to be answer to the XBox’s Achievements system.  The biggest difference between the two systems appears to be that the PS3 rather than  goals being worth certain numeric point values, the PS3 system has Bronze, Silver, and Gold Trophies.  As you collect trophies you are given points that enable you to “level-Up” in a manner similar to an RPG that is displayed on your new profile, the amount of points awarded is dependant on the type of trophy won, bronze offering the least points, and gold the most.  Another feature will be the ability to compare your trophy collection with another player.
