Soulcalibur IV
August 3, 2008
On July 31, 2008, Namco finally released the latest installation in the “Soul” series of games: Soulcalibur IV. The game features the same gameplay modesĀ of previous titles in the series, along with the addition of a new mode called Towers of Lost Souls. Creature creation, a popular feature in Soulcalibur III, also makes a return, with more functionality and stability that allows the player to further customize their character. Star Wars characters also make a guest appearance in this game, with Darth Vader appearing on the PS3 home version, Yoda on the XBOX360 home version, and the Apprentice making an appearance on both.
Along with the usual characters in the series, there are also some new characters that are making their debut: Algol, the main antagonist in the game, who is said to be “the strongest character ever in SC series” by character designer Hideo Yoshie and Hilde, who is similar to Siegfried in the sense she is fully clothed in armor. As with Soulcalibur III, bonus characters also make an appearance.
One of the major features of the series which received a hige re-vamp in Soulcalibur IV is the character creation feature. In Soulcalibur III, a player could only choose a class for their character and then adjust clothing, voice, etc… In this game, not only do these same features return, but the way a character is designed directly affects their performance in battle. Having a character with lots of armor increases their defense, while a player who opts out for heavy armor and instead chooses lots of weapons will have a greater attack force. Players can also adjust the pitch of characters’ voices as well as adjusting the muscularity of a character. This feature is not exclusive to custom characters, though. You may also modify some of the pre-designed characters, to a degree.
Active Matching Battle, abbreviated AMB, is another new addition to the Soul series. Similar to a tag team match, players can switch between characters in a list they choose. Also, when a character is defeated, the next character in the list simply jumps into the ring, rather than a new round beginning. This mode, though, is only present in the story and Tower of Lost Souls.
Along with other noticable additions in the game, many players will now notice that the game is on-line, a first in the Soulcalibur series. Players can now fight on-line with other players from around the world. Some of the confirmed play modes are Standard VS and Special VS. It has also been confirmed by Director Katsutoshi Sasaki that custom-made characters will also be usable in on-line modes.
