Madden NFL 09

August 16, 2008

Here it is, the more than anticipated Madden NFL 09. Madden hit shelves on August 12, 2008 in North America and August 15 in Europe. Many of the die-hard fans of the franchise waited patiently until the midnight release of the game at select Wal-Mart stores. The game was released on a wide variety of consoles, including the Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS, and PSP. In honor of the 20th anniversary of the Madden NFL franchise, a special, limited-edition version of the game, including NFL Head Coach 09, an alternative case, and a revamped version of John Madden Football ‘93 was released.

Along with the usual updates within the series, many new changes have been incorporated into the game. One of the most noticable changes will be the change in commentators. Many football fans will now notice the voices of former Cincinnati Bengal’s wide reveiver Cris Collinsworth and Tom Hammond. Among other changes, is Broadcast Plus Presentation Styles/EA Sports Ticker, enhanced play calling system, new Cameras, improved sidelines, and a handful of other improvements both shared by multiple consoles and individual ones. For example, the Wii version includes features that take advantage of it’s motion censor capabilities, such as calling your own shots using the Wii Remote as a poiner. As with previous titles in the series, online is a strong presence in this game. As well, EA has licensed several songs to be included in the game, with bands such as The All-American Rejects, Franz Ferdinand, Senses Fail, and Underoath.

Play-by-Play commentary will still be provided by John Madden and Al Micheals on the Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions, but all other versions will feature Cris Collinsworth and Tom Hammond as the commentators. EA has confirmed that Madden does play a part in all versions by providing instructions to the Madden IQ. Madden also appears in Mii form exclusively on the Wii version of the game. The game has also received good reviews. Xbox Magazine gave the game a 9 out of 10, and IGN gave the game an 8.8 out of 10.
