Sbore?
September 21, 2008
With the release this month of one of the most eagerly anticipated games in recent memory many are people are saying “This is nice, but where is the game we were promised?” Spore is fast being labelled one of the biggest disappointments in gaming history. 6 years of development has gone into this game but it appears as if that was not enough as many of the radical features promised at the beginning are sadly absent from the released product.
One of the most talked about features early on was the particular physical makeup of yor creature actually affecting how they interact with the enviroment, in the finnished product whenther your creature has feet on his head and his eyes in his armpits makes absolutely no difference to anything. Many critics are calling the game nothing but 5 mini-games ripped of from other leading titles like civilization packaged together under a unifying theme. Will this appeal to the same people who lapped up Will Wrights gold mine The Sims? As this lacks any of the human appeal of the sims and the whole virtual doll house angle is completely absent, I dont see the same crowd liking this game, this game apears to be striving to be to many things to to many people while at the same time, not delivering the gaming experience that was expected.
Another aspect of the game to come under intense critisms is the DRM anti piracy measures, it uses a microsoft style product licensing system that could orginally only be activated 3 times, meaning you could only reinstall the game 2 times in the event of system failure or other reason before the game became unusuable as the product key would no longer be accepted on the internet. EA have since responded to the fan outcry by raising the amount of computers a person may install the game on to to 5 at any one time and unlimitedf installs. I find it ironic that development companies bemoan the loss of revenue blamed on priacy and then waste money on expensive anti-piracy systems that ultimatly dont work and just anger their customer base.
Spore is fast looking like one mans unrealised dream, with the over whelming success of the sims EA would have thrown money and development at Will Wright’s no matter what crackpot idea he came up with, as it happens I think putting Wills fantasies into a working computer game proved far more difficut that expected and rather than admit what they originally thought they could do couldnt be doen, they released a game called Spore, but it’s not the Spore we were promised.
