Diablo 3

December 28, 2008

Diablo III is an upcoming action role-playing game currently in development from Blizzard Entertainment similar in style to its predecessors, Diablo I and Diablo II. The game is being planned for a simultaneous release on both windows and Mac OSX platforms, there are currently no plans for a release on consoles such as the XBox 360 or PS3. There are a possbility of 5 character classes to choose from three of which have been unveiled so far: Barbarian, Witch Doctor, and Wizard. Blizzard is planning to only bring back The Barbarian, previously featured in Diablo II, but former classes may appear in future expansions.

The game takes place in the dark fantasy world of the Diablo series,  Sanctuary. TSanctuary was saved twenty years prior by some of the unnamed heroes in the previous installment of the series. Warriors that survived the onslaught of the armies of the Burning Hells have gone insane from their ordeals, it is now up to a new generation of heroes to face the forces of evil threatening the world of Sanctuary. Players will also  have the opportunity to explore more familiar settings such as Tristram.

Diablo III will use a proprietary game engine that will incorporate Havok physics and will feature some destructible environments. In an effort to not exclude players with older computers the developers are aiming to make the game run on a wide range of systems and system specifications, and have stated that Directx10 will not be a requirement. The game will use a custom 3D game engine in order to present an overhead view to the player, in a somewhat similar way to the isometric view used in the previous games.

As with Diablo II multiplayer games will be possible over Blizzard’s battle.net service, with many of the new features being developed for Starcraft II also available in Diablo III.An enhanced quest system, a random level generator, and a random encounter generator are rumoured for use in order to ensure a level of interest in the game after the main quests have been conqured. The game will include both static and randomly generated levels. As well there will be some  class-specific quests to compliment the main storyline quests.
