The Lord of the Rings: Conquest

January 16, 2009

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Famous words from one of the most famous book series ever written, the Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien and now, after the movies, many games, including an M.M.O. we’ve received a real Lord of the Rings combat game!

Conquest comes to us as the first in the franchise’s history to be a pure combat game. You know the story, you know how things turn out but now you have the chance to live the battles first hand.

The game consists of two campaigns of good and evil. You play through the good campaign as the films events do. Once you’ve finished this, you’ll unlock the evil campaign and gain the opportunity to play and aid the dark forces of Sauron in an all new campaign story. Now I know what you’re thinking and yes, the good guys won. So having a story where evil wins will change the story. Think of it as more of a “what if” scenario.

In each battle you choose from one of four classes, warrior, archer, scout or mage. Each is a little different. Warrior is a sword swinging class and archer is more like a first person shooter with arrows. You’ll also be able to play as some familiar faces from the franchise such as Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, Nazgûl and Sauron himself plus a few others. Campaign can be played through by yourself or co-op with three other friends.

Once you’re finished with the campaigns then there is more to do, much more to do! Multiplayer mode is what you’ll play most. Now you have the chance to play in these battles with others online! Up to 16 people can partake in the death fest in three modes, Team Deathmatch, Conquest and Capture The One Ring. In Deathmatch mode, you kill the other team. In Conquest mode you capture four flags around the battlefield and can gain the ability to summon a hero by capturing all at once. Capture The One Ring mode is a capture the flag mode only.

Most seem to think that Conquest is based off of the Star Wars: Battlefront games but I don’t see why that’s a problem. Running around a famous battlefield as a hero, jumping on a mount, shooting someone off theirs, taking on an orc in sword battle, these things are great fun. Who wouldn’t want to take place in that kind of fun? If you like the Lord of the Rings franchise then you’ll enjoy this game.

So what will it be? Will you join the battle for Middle-Earth or will you cower in your shire?
