200 years after a devastating nuclear war, post apocalyptic America is a breeding ground of mutated beings, radioactive giant animals and killer robots. You, a young wastelander sheltered from the harsh world by the underground bomb shelter you grew up in, must now venture in to the radioactive wastelands of America to find your missing father.

This game rocks, the creators have taken the basic premise of the Mad Max movies and crafted into one of the most engrossing games of recent memory. Fallout 3 is an action role playing game and is the third major game in the Fallout series. What makes this different from man RPG’s is the FPS shooter element of the game, unlike usual RPG’s which often offer a birdseye or 2rd person veiw, Fallout 3 takes place in a fully first person veiw, you can if you wish switch to a 3rd erson veiw if you wish, but you miss alot of the important items this way. Another difference from the norm is that this RPG virtualy does away with meelee combat all together and instead combat rifles and guns are used instead, making for a realistic experience.

One interesting feature is the V.A.T.S system which allows the player to stop combat at any time and select various points on the enemies body at which you would like to shoot, a percentage is given of the likely hood of a strike and the game is resumed, with the corresponding commands given played in a slow motion FMV like sequence, essentially turning real time combat into a form of turn based combat. The V.A.T.S system is vital to early on play as it is a great way to conserve ammunition for your weapons which can be scarce in the wastelands.

The enemies in F3 are many and varied ranging for choulish mutated humans to super strong giant animals, ordrinary humans are often also at the end of your gun sites, the rag doll physics of the game engine matched with the blood splatters and exploding body parts makes for interesting fight sequences that never get dull.

One curious feature of this game is that the main sory quest of the game in which the player must find his missingf father is rather short and easy to complete, the real fun is to be had in the myriad of side-quests that you are lumbered with, it is my recomendation that you complete the side-quests imediatly and do the main quest last, or you finish the game to quickly.

As I said earlier one of the great things about this game is it’s simularities to the classic film trilogy Mad Max, the references are many and varied. From the basic premise of a post apocalypic wasteland populated by small outposts of survivours, down to the dog you can befriend and get to join you on your traveks which is the exact same breed of dog has Max has in Mad Max 2

An expansion pack of sorts has been released in the form of downloadable content, this adds a virtual simulator that takes the player back in time to a famous battle in Anchorage Alaska where America trys to take back Alaska from chinese invaders. 2 more expansions are planed for a release the last of which due in april will allow players to progress beyond the level 20 cap.
